NEW YORK

FRIDAY 20th & SATURDAY 21st July 2012.

After a day and two nights sailing in the Atlantic in calm seas we reached the Verrazano Narrows Bridge at the entrance to Upper New York Bay at about 6am, thence past the Statue of Liberty into the Hudson River, berthing at Pier 90 under the skyline of New York City and Upper Manhattan. The day was overcast and raining and about 22 degrees, but who cares we were in New York.

Two days to try and cram as much as we could see in this wonderful city. We had a full on two days of site seeing arranged, which included an all round tour of the city of Manhattan, the Rockefeller Centre, Ground Zero and the World Trade Centre, Statue of Liberty and the former Ellis Island Immigration Centre now a museum.

What a two days, it was fantastic to see a 360 degree view of Upper and Lower Manhattan from the 70th floor of the Rockefeller Centre building and then of the Ground Zero Site and the new Freedom Tower and second tower under construction at the World Trade Centre. Finally, on the second day in beautiful sunshine, we were able to visit Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty and view it in all its glory, and what a magnificent structure it is. Also a good history lesson was had on Ellis Island and it’s Museum of Immigration dedicated to the early immigrants to America. Time was also spent viewing Central Park, Times Square, Empire State Building, Battery Point, and the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan. Two great tours.

The only tour we didn’t get around to doing was the Sex and the City Tour.

Finally, after some shopping time, time ran out and we had to get back to the ship for a late afternoon departure. But you never get sick of visiting New York, it’s just a great place to be in. The sail away down the Hudson River and Upper New York Bay in the late afternoon was a sight to see and one which will be hard to forget.

We now have three relaxing sea days in the Atlantic and Caribbean before we reach St Thomas in the Virgin Islands.

  1. Dear Marilyn & Warwick,
Seemed like your time in the "big apple" was pretty full on. Also seems like you got the most out of it. Heading south "marn" into the Caribbean and have a nice day. Can't post that joke on your blog or you will get ex-communicated. Hard to imagine being up on a building of 70 stories. Can try to imagine the view you would have received. Enjoy the fine weather, raining here in Coffs. Going to the club on Thursday with some friends for Sonia's birthday (theirs too), might even buy a raffle ticket. Should have a far better chance of winning with you being so far away. Got a nice Merlot from Grays the other week, trying very hard not to drink them all before you get home. Not taking my computer when we go away so will be out of touch for a while. Hope you are keeping well and avoiding the "plague" and will talk again soon.
    Love Sonia & Bob
