Tuesday 10th July 2012.
After two days sailing from Dover through the English Channel and the
North Sea in heavy seas and strong winds and fog, we reached the the Hjelete
Fjord on the west coast of Norway. We then sailed 36 miles down the Fjord to
reach Bergen, Unfortunately it was in thick fog which was disappointing,
however sailing out in the afternoon was the direct opposite and the Fjord was
in all its glory and the scenery was a sight to see with its many islands
surrounding the Fjord.
On arrival it was extremely cold and about 10 degrees However, although
t was still very cold the fog lifted by mid morning which gave us a good look
at Bergen and its surroundings.
Our land excursion took in the full day which included a tour of Bergen
and the fjords and countryside. This place is truly what I expected it to be,
with spectacular mountain scenery particularly around and along the fjords. Late
snow was also evident on the mountain tops. Bergen itself is a colourful and
wonderful place and the city is clean and easy to get around. The tour also
included a visit to an old timber 16th century church and a
spectacular waterfall in the Bergen hinterland. Both well worth the visit. A
late buffet lunch was also had at an old Norwegian hotel on the edge of a fjord
which finished off a great day.
Today was another day to remember, tomorrow we visit Lerwick in the
Shetland Islands.
