CANNES FRENCH RIVIERA MONACO

SUNDAY Ist JULY 2012.

Overnight in calm seas of the Mediterranean  from Livorno to Cannes on the French Riviera. However the heavens were not so good to us today with an overcast clammy and humid day. The ship had to anchor in the bay about 1km off shore and we had to be tendered in for our land excursions.

Cannes is a beautiful clean coastal town on the French Riviera, and a place you would always like to come back to for a further visit. Our land excursion included a visit to Monaco approx one and a half hours travelling from Cannes, and to Prince Rainier’s private Car Museum.

Monaco is an amazing place, a city of only three square kilometres, where only the rich and famous live. We discovered the Old City of Monaco which nestled on a high ridge above Monaco itself and which houses the Royal Palace of the Grimaldi’s. Its an area of beautiful old buiidings and a magnificent cathederal where Prince Rainier and Princess Grace are buried.

We were also given a tour of the streets of the grand pre circuit, the marina and Grand Casino areas.

Last and not least we visited Prince Rainier’s Private Car Museum which was mind boggling. Over 100 vehicles, all in mint condition and everyone able to be driven off the floor. The vehicles ranged in age from 1904 to a current special model of Stirling Moss’s Sports Mercede’s, an unbeleivable motor car. Also included were Ferrari’s, Langborgine’s, and Prince Rainier’s first car an Austin 7. This was a place you could spend all day in but unfortunately, we had to get back to the ship.

It was a wonderful day all round and a place you would not forget easily.

Tomorrow is Barcelona, but our Captain has just advised that we are moving into rough weather, which will probably be the first for the trip.
