SUNDAY 17th JUNE 2012.
After exiting the Suez Canal we overnighted through the Mediterranean
to the sea port and City on Alexandria the Northern Gateway to Egypt. We
arrived to a morning of hot steamy and overcast day of about 38 degrees.
Having been to the Pyramids on our last world cruise, we only elected
to do a short land excursion doing the main tourist sites around Alexandria.
During the morning we visited the ancient Fort Quait Bey at the harbour
entrance to Alexandria, The Roman Amphitheater, and the Alexandria Library and
Museum.
Both the Fort and the Amphitheater needed a clean up but were well
worth the visit. However the Library and Museum which were built in 2002 with
$22 million of funds from other countries, were fantastic and beautifully
maintained. This building is a must to see if ever visiting Alexandria.
We also did the rounds of the city and unfortunately it is not a good
look. Alexandria is the 2nd biggest city in Egypt, but was squalid ,dirty, unclean, unkept and grubby
with rubbish strewn streets, which unfortunately is typical of Egypt.
Definitely a city I would not go back to.
That said, our next Port of call is Mykonos, in the Aegean Sea in two
days time which we are looking forward to.
